Although born in Tennessee and raised in Louisiana, Spanish American David Glasgow Farragut joined the Union at the outbreak of the Civil War. His successes at New Orleans and Mobile Bay count among the most decisive naval victories of the Civil War, securing his place as one of the most celebrated American heroes. In 1866 he was the first U.S. Navy officer awarded the rank of admiral. Today his statue occupies the center of Farragut Square in downtown Washington, D.C.
