This Spanish tradition has many variations. Each family has its own special recipe for festive occasions. You can use any water: plain, carbonated, lemon- or ginger-flavored, or no-sugar-added flavored soda. (Use uncarbonated water if you are not using all the sangría at once. During storage the carbonation will be lost.) You can use almost any fruit: try apples, bananas, peaches, strawberries, or raspberries. Start with the basic recipe below and experiment!

Serves: 12
Serving size: 3/4 cup

6 whole cloves
6 unpeeled orange slices (1 medium orange)
4 cups cold red wine
1 6-oz. can frozen orange juice

3/4

cup lime juice
 1/4 cup sugar
4 cups cold soda water

1. Place a whole clove on the peel of each orange slice. Combine all ingredients except water in a large bowl and allow to rest for 20 minutes.

2.

Add the water, stir, and serve immediately over ice. Refrigerate leftovers.
