Walking Tips

Members Save 20% at Any Reebok or Rockport Outlet Store (AARP.org)

The Naked Truth About Foot Care

1 Buy "walking shoes" made for back-to-front movement. Avoid other athletic shoes, even running shoes whose thick soles can be a tripping hazard for many seniors.
2 Focus on comfort and fit, not the size. Size can vary greatly by company and the country of origin.
3 Account for swelling. Shop for shoes at the end of the day or after a workout.
4 Bring your athletic socks or any special inserts you normally wear.
5 Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside the shoes. You should have about a half-inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
6 Take a good walk around the store. The shoes should feel comfortable from the start.
7 Buy athletic socks or special "walking" socks that provide extra cushioning.
