What if calculating a health risk were as easy as clicking a mouse? A website run by the Harvard School of Public Health has made that possible. Even better, the site is in Spanish.
Cuidar de Su Salud (Your Disease Risk) offers an easy-to-follow format. You can assess your risk for five diseases: diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, heart disease, and various cancers. When you click on an illness, the site guides you through an anonymous questionnaire requesting information such as age, gender, height, weight, and race, as well as more specific information, including family history, diet, and exercise. You are then given a rating of where you fall on the risk spectrum—along with suggestions on ways to lower your risk.
Remember, however helpful this and other health websites might be, they don’t substitute for your doctor’s advice. After all, the computer won’t take your blood pressure, examine your ears, or ask how your kids are doing.
