A Walker's True Spirit

Behold the Potatoes in Peru (August/
September 2007)

Rolene Walker has gone from pushing paper to pounding the pavement.

The former U.S. Department of Labor administrator strapped on her walking shoes and is on a two-year trek from San Diego to Santiago, Chile. Her mission: using her nonprofit, Walk With Earth/Caminata Por La Tierra, to educate people she meets about the environment.

The devout Quaker received what she calls her "spiritual calling" during a prayer meeting, but thought God was joking.

"I always wanted to go to Chile because that's where my father was born," she says. "I just never thought I'd have to walk there."
