If you're looking to really get away, why
not think about a cruise? More and more ships these days have grandkids
in mind. Several cruise lines sail along the Mexican Riviera from Southern
California to the Mexican ports of Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan,
and Puerto Vallarta. After a few shore excursions, such as snorkeling
in Cabo, or watching cliff divers in Mazatlan, your grandkids will be
chattering in Spanish like natives.
From the East Coast, Miami and
San Juan, Puerto Rico, are both departure points for Caribbean cruises. If you depart from Miami, spend a few days in port ahead of time, so
the grandkids can sample Cuban music, dance, and delicacies in Little
Havana. Or, if you're in San Juan, explore the 16th and 17th century Spanish
colonial buildings along the cobblestone-lined streets in Old Town San
Juan.
Wherever you choose to go, use the time to
get to know your grandkids. Tell them stories about their heritage,
their Hispanic roots, and the great contributions our culture has made
in this country. But, most of all have fun. With luck, they'll want
to join you again next year!
